The Baptism of Jesus

When Jesus arrived at the Jordan River, he sought out John the Baptist, who had been preaching repentance and baptizing crowds of people in preparation for the Messiah. Jesus asked to be baptized by John, but John tried to stop him, protesting, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

Jesus replied gently, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Understanding, John agreed and baptized Jesus in the river.

As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, heaven opened above him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on him. At the same moment, a voice spoke from heaven: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

This moment marked the beginning of Jesus's public ministry, and it revealed something extraordinary to everyone watching: the presence of God the Father speaking from heaven, God the Son standing in the water, and God the Spirit descending as a dove -- all present together in a single, unforgettable moment by the riverside. From there, Jesus would go on to begin the ministry of teaching, healing, and calling disciples that would define the rest of the Gospels.
